The Art of Capturing Motion in Animal Sculptures

Making animal sculptures that appear lifelike and in motion is an art in itself. At MornsunGifts, our talented artists employ a variety of techniques to make the animals look so real, as if they could leap off the stand at any moment.

Realistic Animal Sculptures Techniques:

One of the many ways to make animal sculptures realistic, of course, is to observe the way animals move. Our artists spend time watching animals around their homes to see how they walk, run and play. (That’s how we learned how each animal moves, so we can make our sculptures more realistic.

Another technique we use is armatures. Armatures are metal arm supports that assist to support a sculpture while it is being constructed. When we sculpt the armature to the shape that we think most resembles the animal, we are able to portray a sense of movement and balance in the animal when it is done.

Similarly, texture is also key for creating the effect of “life” on animal sculptures. Our artists pour over the texture of the animal’s fur, feathers, or scales. They employ various tools to make textures that imply movement. With touches such as the way fur ripples, our sculptures appear to become real.

Introduction to Lively Animal Sculptures:

A: In order to create animal sculptures that are perceived as moving, our artists are concentrating on expressing the energy of the animal. Through examining how animals move and behave, we make sculptures that seem to be frozen in the act.

One way we get there is with enthusiastic poses. When we sculpt animals in poses that suggest movement, such as the flying bird or the running cheetah, we can produce sculptures that seem to be in motion. By sculpting the muscles and curves of the animal’s body, we can portray energy in our sculptures.

Another method of producing lively sculpture is the careful pose of the sculpture. By setting the animal in an advantageous pose, our artists are able to depict a sense of motion, as well as harmony, that captures the gaze of viewers.

Animals Brought to Life in Sculpture:

Corporealizing animals in sculpture is a delicate art that requires attention to detail. Here at MornsunGifts, our artists spend a lot of time practicing, studying animals in action, and finally choose the best practice from countless tests and sculptures to show as what you see.

A big part of this, too, is capturing the animal's personality. Whether it's the free-spirited attitude of a puppy or the majestic stance of a lion, our artists know exactly how to capture its most adorable expression. With attention to details such as facial expressions and poses, we are able to create life-like sculptures representing the natural spirits of each animal.

Sculpting Animals in Motion:

It’s fun but it’s tricky to sculpt animals that look like they’re moving. It calls for careful consideration of how animals are built and how they move. Through a love of animals and exploration of art techniques, our artists’ work becomes bursting with life.

What we’re trying to do is draw smooth lines, and one thing that will help make those smooth lines is to slow down and make the computer do as little work as possible. By working a lot in the curves and edges of the animal’s anatomy, our animators give he a supa’movement, absolutely astonishing. By thinking about how light plays on the sculpture, we can create a sense of depth that adds to the notion of movement.

Motion in Animal Sculptures at Epcot:

Sculptures represent shape and motion in animals and excitement is needed in this journey. Exploring different poses, textures and compositions, our artists play with what can be done in animal sculpture, as a result our sculptures are filled with life.

One of the ways that we explore motion is through negative space. With the careful planning of areas around the animal, our artists indicate movement that draws the viewer into that space. In order to balance mass and void, we are creating sculptures that appear to breathe.
