One of the many ways to make animal sculptures realistic, of course, is to observe the way animals move. Our artists spend time watching animals around their homes to see how they walk, run and play. (That’s how we learned how each animal moves, so we can make our sculptures more realistic.

Another technique we use is armatures. Armatures are metal arm supports that assist to support a sculpture while it is being constructed. When we sculpt the armature to the shape that we think most resembles the animal, we are able to portray a sense of movement and balance in the animal when it is done.

Similarly, texture is also key for creating the effect of “life” on animal sculptures. Our artists pour over the texture of the animal’s fur, feathers, or scales. They employ various tools to make textures that imply movement. With touches such as the way fur ripples, our sculptures appear to become real.

What we’re trying to do is draw smooth lines, and one thing that will help make those smooth lines is to slow down and make the computer do as little work as possible. By working a lot in the curves and edges of the animal’s anatomy, our animators give he a supa’movement, absolutely astonishing. By thinking about how light plays on the sculpture, we can create a sense of depth that adds to the notion of movement.

Motion in Animal Sculptures at Epcot:

Sculptures represent shape and motion in animals and excitement is needed in this journey. Exploring different poses, textures and compositions, our artists play with what can be done in animal sculpture, as a result our sculptures are filled with life.

One of the ways that we explore motion is through negative space. With the careful planning of areas around the animal, our artists indicate movement that draws the viewer into that space. In order to balance mass and void, we are creating sculptures that appear to breathe.
