In these days of mass production, there is something magical about a hand-sculpted one-of-a-kind creation. This is the craft of character design sculpting, a process from concept to threedimensional object. It’s the round from idea to piece with personality, a story and a soul. For the world builders and story tellers, it’s nearly time to hang up bridging the conceptual thing with a real thing.
Path from Sketch to Something Consistent
All recollect characters sculptures are created in the mind eye without the use of clay and resin. It is an introduction to exploration, to definition. Designers enter in their sketch and designs of various forms of the character when trying to narrow down to what it is. Could it be a holiday decoration in the shape of a fanciful animal bumpkin? A solemn religious figure? Or how about an animated bobblehead that absolutely pops with pizzazz? Every curve, each expression and dimensions are scrutinized.
This is vital as the 2D map, which you see when you’re playing will be the base for everything else that happens. In these pages, the look of the character started to develop. These sketches are subsequently turned (roughly still) into a 3D model, which could very likely be constructed from something malleable like clay. This is the first time the character moves in our physical world and the hands of the sculptor are shaping him existence and reshaping shapes until the silhouette is comfortable in any position. It is a ballet between what the artist desires and what this stuff is doing.
Give Its Material & Craft a Breathe
Once we have the prototype completed, it is simple a case of selecting material – this latter decision is essential in creating character ‘personality’. Different materials have different weight, texture and finishing. Using resin as an example, it is highly flexible and able to reproduce unbelievable small detail in a print to the extent that you will be able to see every tiny crevice in the garments of a statue or discern the faces of the little creature in an architectural model as having a level of believability a thousand times more than that of real life. It is the type of material that can be shaped to resemble almost anything: Paper takes paint well, and adds a deep color that is long lasting.
Mill ceramics and bisque, is an all time classic and cannot be said to be old. The firing method has produced a heavy object that cannot be broken and is ideal in the decorations of homes of the rich such as book ends, picture frames or ceramic flowers. The feel and touch of ceramic surface is something that is quite attractive. There could not be any overestimation on the importance of laying that down, as tangible experience, at this level. Master craftsmen always stay on track and hand pour, sculpt and fire each of them in an effort to maintain the integrity of the original designs. The final hand painting and the tipping actually form the finishing touches of every creation to make it unique, giving it the shadows and highlights, which would be completely impossible to be created by a machine- hence, imbuing the character with its own spirit.
The Potential of Personalization and Collaboration
The rad thing about character design sculpture these days is, the level of customization available to create something that has never existed before. Here is where client and creative minds make out. Bringing an original character to life is as much a team effort as a project achievement. It all starts with a client’s unique idea whether it’s the logo of a new company, or the family pet cast as an over-the-top statue that evokes both Mme Tussauds and the wax museum at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco in foot-tall bronze; collectors who want something really special for their architectural model of New York City?
It’s up to us to listen, interpret and advise knowing how to move a project from concept to something that can actually be made. We will consult on the performance of disparate materials and how to accomplish a given detail in the most effective manner. These close relationships are how a scribble, or a fuzzy idea, is whittled down and transformed over time into something more sculptural. So, the outcome, isn’t just a run of the mill object but something individual that encapsulates a specific image or idea perfectly which is particularly suitable for non-identical home decorations or personalized gifts.
Sculpture of character design is an art and a testament of the human artistic imagination. One that does justice to imagination as much as tradition, and brings back so much more than ornamentation; they are remindances of some tale always in a state of suspension in time and form. We are fond of this art, and will do our care and experience to bring to reality the most inspired of your works.
